Creatine in coffee: can you mix them, and should you?

Yes, you can put creatine in coffee. Here's what heat and caffeine mean for creatine, how much people usually take and how to make it a daily habit.

The short answer: yes, you can put creatine in coffee. Unflavored creatine monohydrate dissolves easily in warm liquid and doesn't change the taste. Two things are worth knowing: drink it soon after you mix it, and the research on caffeine is mixed.

Does hot coffee ruin creatine?

Not in the time it takes to drink a cup. In liquid, creatine slowly turns into creatinine, a waste product your body doesn't use the same way. Heat and time speed that up. A cup you finish that morning is fine. What to avoid is batching: don't mix a week of creatine coffee and keep it in the fridge.

What about caffeine?

An older study suggested caffeine might blunt some of creatine's effects. Later research has been mixed, and several studies found no difference when people took both. If that worries you, take your creatine in decaf, water or a smoothie instead. It mixes into any drink.

How much and when

QuestionShort answer
How much?3–5 g a day is typical. Follow the label on your product.
When?Any time of day. Taking it every day matters more than timing.
In what?Coffee, water, smoothies or juice
Loading phase?Optional. Many people skip it and take a steady daily amount.

How to make it a habit

  1. Put the creatine in the mug before the coffee, so it's part of the routine rather than an extra step.
  2. Stir for ten seconds. Warm liquid dissolves it fully; cold drinks can leave a little grit.
  3. Drink it the same morning. Don't make it ahead.
  4. Keep the jar next to the coffee so you see it every day.

Hot, iced or blended

  • Hot coffee: the easiest option. It dissolves in a few stirs and you won't taste it.
  • Iced coffee: stir the creatine into a splash of hot coffee or hot water first, then add ice. Stirred straight into cold coffee, it tends to settle at the bottom.
  • Smoothies: add it with the liquid and blend as usual.

Unflavored creatine monohydrate has almost no taste, so it won't change your coffee. If you notice a slight grittiness, it just needs more stirring or warmer liquid.

Check with your doctor first if

You have kidney concerns, are pregnant or nursing, or take medication. It's also worth a quick conversation if you're under 18 or new to supplements in general.
